For Avalere Health's heRo3 modeling application, I led the UX design process for the introduction of the "Saved Scenarios" feature. This feature was designed to address the challenge of enabling users to save and load alternate environments for their models, crucial for scenarios requiring different input values or modifications.

Challenge

The challenge was to facilitate the creation and management of model scenarios efficiently. Currently, users had to resort to creating multiple copies of a model, leading to inefficiencies in data management and updates. The key was to provide a solution that allowed for easy modification of the base model while preserving individual scenario variations.

Research

We conducted stakeholder interviews to define the project scope, learning from past design attempts to avoid over-scoping. Additionally, we analyzed existing designs and applications to incorporate best practices for reviewing changes and merging differences.

Research was conducted to determine best practices for tasks such as viewing additions and subtractions and merging differences.

Ideation

We developed a roadmap outlining desired features and associated business requirements. This roadmap guided our design reviews and ensured alignment with project goals.

A roadmap was created early in the ideation phase to guide our tasks and assist with scope estimations.
Identifying areas of the app that would be impacted allowed us to consider additional edge cases.

Prototyping and Iteration

Using Figma, we created wireframes and mockups, incorporating atomic design elements for rapid iteration. Variants within Figma components facilitated the presentation of multiple design options.

Regular presentations to stakeholders allowed for continuous feedback, fostering a sense of ownership and facilitating rapid iteration. By formulating targeted questions for design critiques, we gained valuable insights to refine our designs effectively.

Creating atomic and molecular components in Figma allowed us to quickly iterate during the prototyping phase.
Populating prototypes with realistic data assisted the users in understanding the feature and identifying additional areas of attention.

Implementation + Results

Close collaboration with developers ensured the translation of designs into functional features. Regular checkpoints and dedicated handoff meetings maintained design fidelity throughout the implementation process.

The successful implementation of the Saved Scenarios feature led to increased user engagement and streamlined workflow. Stakeholder feedback and positive user responses validated the effectiveness of our design approach.

Reflections

This project underscored the importance of proper scoping and modular design for complex features. Despite past challenges, our determination and focus on user needs enabled us to deliver a valuable solution.

The introduction of the Saved Scenarios feature marked a significant milestone in improving the heRo3 modeling application. It was gratifying to overcome past hurdles and provide users with a tool that enhances their workflow, reaffirming our commitment to delivering impactful UX solutions.
