Deepurr & Deepurr

Skills Used:Game Jam|Illustration

I collaborated on a Ludum Dare game jam project, specifically for Ludum Dare #48, where participants were tasked with creating a video game within a 2-3 day timeframe. My role primarily involved creating illustrations and designing assets for the game.

Challenge

With limited time and a small team of three, consisting of one designer and two developers, the challenge was to rapidly iterate on designs and remain agile enough to pivot as needed. Generating the necessary assets within the tight timeframe was crucial for the game's functionality.

Research

Our research involved exploring various styles to determine the desired look and feel of the game. Recognizing the need for a potentially large number of sprites, we first looked to understand the scope of asset requirements.

Ideation

Utilizing Procreate for illustrations and Blender for 3D assets, we engaged in a fast-paced and collaborative process. Continuous video calls and chats allowed us to exchange ideas and sketches, facilitating rapid iteration.

The close-knit nature of the team enabled seamless integration of illustrations into the game as soon as they were completed. This immediate feedback loop allowed us to identify areas for refinement quickly.

Prototyping + Testing

As the jam deadline approached, rapid testing became a requirement to ensure playability. Last-minute design adjustments were made based on feedback to enhance the overall gaming experience.

Implementation

Our designs were seamlessly implemented through close collaboration with developers. While challenges inevitably arose, clear communication and a shared vision ensured fidelity to the design.

Reflections

Despite the time constraints, we successfully delivered a fully playable game. Feedback from players highlighted the hand-drawn illustrations as a standout feature of the game.

This project was both enjoyable and instructive, teaching me the importance of rapid iteration and the value of delivering imperfect products for feedback. The experience reinforced the notion that progress stems from releasing and refining based on user input.

I eagerly anticipate participating in future game jams, using the lessons learned from this project to further enhance my skills.
